Why did Lottoland choose the Klerksdorp Tehuis vir Bejaardes as a project to support?

Klerksdorp Home for the Aged was established in 1972. We provide assisted living care to 22 residents, 46 frail care residents and 25 Alzheimer residents. We provide 24-hour nursing care service to these residents and 3 meals a day. A laundry service is provided to the residents and have cleaning staffs is responsible for the cleaning of the building. We have a staff component of 53 that inter alia consist of the manager, 5 nursing sisters, a matron, 23 caregivers, cleaning staff, laundry staff and admin staff. Our kitchen is outsourced to Reef Caterers. A medical doctor allocated by the Department of Health is rendering a service once a week to the home. We also take residents to the hospital for follow up treatment and arrange for the collection of their medication. Social and spiritual programmes are arranged with the assistance of volunteers.

A Total of 30 % of our residents cannot afford our fees anymore and this put additional strain on our budget. The effect is that we don’t receive R1 440 00 per year from these residents. Our total budget to provide the service is: R 8 400 836.00.

The shortfall we collect through donations and fundraising. This budget does however not make provision for any preventative maintenance work.

Our subsidy stayed the same of the past 3 years. Our municipal account doubled during the past year and we must prepare for the increase expected this year. We have in the past year changed all our geysers to solar geysers to try and reduce our electricity expenses. We plan to install a solar system to provide in our electricity supply. The donor will pay for part of the infrastructure and the Home must pay the installation fees. We will need to fundraise to cover these costs. Over the years our preventative maintenance work fell behind and we need to obtain additional funding to paint our building inside and at the outside. Our flooring needs to be replaced since it has cracks in, our plumbing is old and needs to be replaced. Currently we admit more frail care residents and Alzheimer patients. The needs of these patients differ from the assisted living residents. We still have some bathrooms with a bath and since so many of our residents are frail, these bathrooms need to be changed to showers. Since Covid, our fundraising is under huge pressure and our volunteers and funders are very limited. We need assistance to transfer our building to meet the needs of our residents and to safe on our overhead costs.
